In follow up to last weeks post "13 Toxic Chemicals that are Hiding in your Bathroom" I have been experimenting with some homemade, all-natural cosmetics formulas. Below I have listed five that I absolutely adore. Some are so simple you won’t believe that they are actually effective until you give them a try!
1. Ruby Red Beet Lip Balm
I LOVE this homemade lip balm! Beets are truly a beauty gift from Mother Nature, as their lovely hue looks beautiful on lips and cheeks as well!
Instructions: Melt ¼ cup beeswax, remove from heat and stir in ¼ cup castor oil and 2 TBSP sesame oil. Add as much beet juice as you like, depending on how red you like it. Store in a small glass jar in the refrigerator.
Tip: You can also use the beet juice on it's own as a lip & cheek stain.
2. Honey Citrus Body Scrub
Honey is a natural humectant, which means it is able to draw water into the skin. This natural moisturizer pairs well with an exfoliating sugar scrub, which removes dead skin cells, allowing the honey to do its job. This scrub is great first thing in the morning as the citrusy aroma gives an energy boost while invigorating the skin.
Instructions: Blend together the following ingredients and then store in a jar: 1 tsp pure honey, 1/4 cup light olive oil, 1 cup raw or granulated sugar, and 2 teaspoon fresh citrus zest.
3. Olive Oil Shaving Cream
I can’t believe I have been purchasing expensive shaving creams all these years! This is ridiculously easy and leaves you with incredibly soft, silky-smooth skin!
Instructions: Simply apply a thin layer of olive (or avocado) oil to skin and shave. Rinse with warm water and soap.
4. Avocado, Honey & Olive Oil Face Mask
Avocados are the perfect ingredient in a face mask as they have some fantastic properties that support healthy, glowing skin. Avocados contain the antioxidant Vitamin E, which fights free radicals responsible for the aging process. They also are a good source Vitamin C, another important antioxidant known to promote healthy collagen production and minimize fine lines.
Instructions: Mash 1/4 and avocado in a bowl and mix thoroughly with 2tsp olive oil and 2tsp of honey. Apply mixture to the skin and leave the mask on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse the mask off with warm water and voila!
Tip: If you have naturally oily skin, you may prefer to apply only mashed avocado; this works wonders on its own as well.
5. Revitalizing Hair Mask
This protein-rich hair mask strengthens the hair, promoting thick and lustrous locks.
Instructions: Whisk together ½ cup of plain yogurt, 1 TBSP lemon juice, and 1 egg. Apply to clean, damp hair. Wrap hair with a towel and allow treatment to work it’s magic for 20 minutes. Thoroughly rinse with warm water.
